I am extremely pleased to hear President Trump's announcement confirming that U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel will have a partnership in the United States. This transformational transaction ensures steel jobs will remain in America and directly impacts thousands of families in our region.
This has been a long time coming. As mayor, I facilitated conversations with Nippon Steel and talks with mayors in steel making cities and towns from around the country. I spent months conducting due diligence and listening to the concerns of steelworkers, union leadership and members of the Congressional Black Caucus around the country. I stuck to my guns even when others opposed this deal because I knew it was good for our citizens.
I want to thank Senator Todd Young for working diligently with me throughout this entire process to ensure clear communication with President Trump on the value and impact of this deal for communities like Gary. A special thanks to Congressman Bennie Thompson, Maxine Waters, and members of the Congressional Black Caucus for their steadfast support.
Nippon Steel has addressed national security concerns raised by stakeholders. Most importantly, they have committed to negotiating a transaction that both honors the current US Steelworkers labor agreement and promises significant investments in Gary Works, the largest mill in the U.S. Steel portfolio, with approximately 4,000 employees.
Behind the scenes, I fought to ensure that not one steelworker job would be lost. Today, Nippon has committed not only to maintain the current level of union jobs, but has also agreed to an increase in the number of good, well-paid steel making jobs in America.
For communities like Gary who have suffered from decades of disinvestment, this is a historic moment. As we learn more details, we will continue to update the public and work with all stakeholders to ensure the best outcomes for our residents and steelmaking families.
