GARY, IND. Mayor Eddie Melton released a video briefing outlining the City of Gary’s coordinated recovery and response initiatives following the severe storm that struck the city on August 11, 2026. The extreme weather caused widespread disruptions including, power outages, downed trees and power lines, flooding, and significant structural damage.

“I know these have been difficult and uncertain days for many across our city, and I want you to know that you are not facing this alone,” said Mayor Melton. “The City of Gary is here, and we are working every day to respond to the damage, connect residents with the resources they need, and help our community recover.”

To date, NIPSCO has experienced 338,000 total outages due to ongoing storm damage from Aug. 11th-16th. Of the original 301,000 affected customers, NIPSCO has restored power to 75% of those customers with 75,000 remaining.

Restoration Expectations and Current System-Level ETRs

  • Approximately 90% restored by Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 11:59 p.m.
  • Approximately 100% restored by Friday, Aug. 21, at 11:59 p.m.

As part of their non-stop effort, NIPSCO remains fully engaged in power restoration across our city. Some larger service areas are still undergoing damage assessments. The city will share neighborhood-specific updates as soon as we have them.

During the update, Mayor Melton outlined the City’s emergency response, storm cleanup efforts, and resources available to residents. The update also highlights the continued efforts of first responders, City crews, NIPSCO, community organizations, businesses, and other partners supporting residents throughout the recovery.
