GARY, IND — The City of Gary has launched GrowIN Gary, a new land sale platform connecting residents, developers and investors with property redevelopment opportunities throughout the city. The platform provides property information and an interactive map, making it easier to identify available properties.
“Gary is a city with tremendous potential, and we are continuing to create pathways for people who want to invest in our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Eddie D. Melton. “GrowIN Gary makes those opportunities easier to find while giving residents, developers and investors a clearer understanding of how they can be part of Gary’s growth.”
“Our focus on Downtown West/Holy Angels, Midtown-Froebel, and Midtown-Jackson directly aligns new development with city transit and strategic public investments," said Chris Harris Executive Director of Redevelopment. "According to an Indiana University Housing Study, 40% of home buyers are looking for properties priced at $150,000 and below in Lake County. Consecutive quarterly increases in active households reported by the U.S. Postal Service through Q2 2022 clearly signal that Gary’s housing market is gaining momentum, and we are committed to meeting this demand with high-quality affordable housing.”
The 2026 pilot program focuses on select neighborhoods benefiting from private investment and City-led improvements. Properties will have a minimum starting price of $0.75 per square foot, based on 10 professionally appraised land values. The pilot program will help encourage redevelopment and inform future expansion.
“GrowIN Gary is about making the redevelopment process more accessible, transparent, and easier to navigate,” said Camisha Bell, Director of the GrowIN Gary program. “By putting property information and opportunities in one place, we can connect interested buyers and developers with properties that have the potential to return to productive use and contribute to neighborhood revitalization.”
The program is supported by Indiana Code 36-1-11-19, formerly known as Senate Bill 232, which helps streamline the sale of certain municipal properties and supports moving properties into productive use.
The legislation also provides a pricing methodology that allows property pricing to be based on the average price per square foot of 10 professionally appraised parcels rather than requiring an individual appraisal for every property. The appraisals used in the pricing process are available through GrowIN Gary for public review.
GrowIN Gary is part of the City of Gary’s ongoing efforts to encourage investment, support neighborhood revitalization, and create new opportunities for the redevelopment of vacant and underutilized properties.
