Mayor Eddie Melton responds to Senate Bill 181 targeting Gary and Northwest Indiana

January 25, 2024

We are experiencing a national humanitarian crisis at our borders and cannot forget that there is a human cost to inaction. Men, women, and children are suffering needlessly. Local communities are being asked to make up for a lack of leadership at a federal level.

I have been made aware of Indiana Senate Bill 181 by members of our Gary legislative delegation. I believe this bill is unnecessary and that it is unproductive for the State’s Attorney General to insert himself in this national crisis.

The Melton Administration’s priority is to ensure the safety of the residents of the City of Gary. We are aware of the impact this crisis is having on other communities around the country, due to the inhumane actions of Texas Governor Abbott.

If and when this issue begins to affect Gary, our citizens should know that I am committed to addressing this crisis in a humane and ethical way.
