Gary, IND. The City of Gary and Mayor Eddie Melton are proud to announce that the Gary/Chicago International Airport has been awarded a $10 million federal grant to construct a new air traffic control tower. The new facility will replace the airport’s current tower, which has been in operation since 1972.
“Today’s investment in the Gary/Chicago International Airport is an investment in the future of our city and region,” said Mayor Melton. “This new air traffic control tower will strengthen airport operations, improve safety, and support continued economic growth and development opportunities for Gary.”
The grant was awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Contract Tower (FCT) Program, which supports airports across the country by funding modernized air traffic control facilities and infrastructure improvements. The new tower, which will stand 50 feet taller than the current structure, is expected to create 115 skilled trade jobs and generate more than 23,500 hours of construction work.
“This project represents continued progress for Gary and reinforces the important role our airport plays in driving economic opportunities throughout the region,” added Mayor Melton. “Investments like this help position our city for long-term growth while creating opportunities for local workers and businesses.”
While the existing air traffic control tower remains operational, it has become increasingly obsolete and no longer meets the airport’s growing needs. Planning efforts to replace the tower began in 2022 in coordination with the FAA, with the project advancing in September 2024 following formal approval of the Siting Study Report.
The City of Gary extends thanks to Congressman Frank J. Mrvan, US Senator Todd Young, and the FAA for helping secure the funding for Gary's future. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2026 and be completed by late 2027.
