Statement from the Gary Police Department, Chief Derrick Cannon Regarding the Death of Nicole Mabon-Brewer

September 10, 2025

GARY, IND. On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Gary Police Department officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of 20th Place, where they located a deceased female later identified as 47-year-old Nicole Mabon-Brewer.

The incident remains under active investigation. In alignment with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office, the Gary Police Department concurs with the decision to request another agency to conduct the investigation. At the request of Prosecutor Bernard A. Carter, the Indiana State Police has assumed full responsibility for leading the inquiry.

This step reflects a shared commitment by both the Gary Police Department and the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office to ensure transparency, impartiality, and the avoidance of any potential conflicts of interest in handling this sensitive matter.

The City of Gary extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Nicole Mabon-Brewer during this difficult time.

As this remains an active investigation, no additional details are available at this time.
