GARY, IN – At approximately 10:33 a.m. on February 27, 2026, Gary Fire Department personnel observed Gary Police Department officers attempting to gain entry at 5900 Forrest Avenue, for a welfare check. Fire personnel stopped to offer assistance and subsequently assisted officers with entry into the residence.

Upon entry, first responders located two deceased individuals, one male and one female, inside the apartment.

During the assessment of the scene, responders noted evidence of a prior fire event in the kitchen area. There was no active fire at the time of entry. The Gary Fire Department was not dispatched to this address for a fire and has no record of responding to any reported fire at this location.

“This is an unfortunate and tragic event, and we send our heartfelt condolences to the family members affected,” said Fire Chief Larry Tillman II. “Incidents like this emphasize how critical it is for residents to maintain working smoke alarms and practice basic fire‑safety measures in their homes. Early detection and prevention can save lives.”

The Gary Fire Department, Gary Police Department, Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, and Lake County Coroner’s Office are actively investigating the incident. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the appropriate agencies.
