Gary Fire Department and Gary Police Department Respond to Fatal Hit-and-Run Incident

July 10, 2026

GARY, IN – July 9, 2026 – At approximately 11:21 a.m., units from the Gary Fire Department and Gary Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Melton Road and Clay Street for a reported motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian.  

Upon arrival, emergency responders located one adult female victim who was unresponsive at the scene. Fire department personnel immediately assessed the victim for injuries and signs of life. Following their evaluation, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.  

The Gary Fire Department secured the scene while officers with the Gary Police Department initiated an investigation into the incident, which is believed to be a fatal hit-and-run involving an unknown vehicle. Detectives are actively working to identify the vehicle and driver involved.  

The Lake County Coroner's Office responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation regarding the victim's identity and cause of death. The victim's name will be released by the Coroner's Office following notification of family members and completion of preliminary investigative procedures.  

Fire Chief Larry Tillman offered the following statement:

"Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased. This tragic incident is a reminder that this could have been any one of our family members. We urge all motorists to slow down, remain alert, and exercise caution, especially in construction zones and areas where workers and pedestrians may be present. A moment of inattention can have devastating consequences."
