GARY, IN – September 25, 2025 – The Gary Fire Department (GFD) successfully extinguished a significant structure fire that occurred late last night at the Summer Furniture Store, located at 3320 Grant St. in Gary, Indiana.
At approximately 9:31 PM on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, GFD units were dispatched to reports of a commercial structure fire. Crews arrived to heavy smoke and flames venting through the roof.
With heavy fire showing, GFD launched a combination attack: interior crews advanced lines while exterior crews used the aerial stream, making multiple forced entries to finish suppression and overhaul.
"Our crews worked quickly and aggressively to contain and extinguish this fire," said Chief Larry Tillman. "Their immediate response prevented a complete loss of the structure, although the inventory suffered significant damage."
Incident & Investigation
The fire was localized to the center-rear area with extension into the ceiling; the most significant impact was heavy smoke damage across the inventory. The building was closed at the time, and no injuries were reported. The cause remains under investigation by the Gary Fire Department, in coordination with the Gary Police Department, the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, and ATF.
The Gary Fire Department is committed to ensuring public safety and will provide updates if needed.
