Investigation Underway Following Police Response to Armed Subject

December 15, 2025

GARY, IND. On December 14, 2025, officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of Tennessee Street regarding a suicidal subject armed with a knife who had sustained self-inflicted stab wounds.

Upon arrival in the area, officers located the subject in the east alley near 22nd Avenue and Ohio Street. The subject was observed standing in the alley, still holding the knife covered in blood. Officers on the scene issued verbal commands ordering the individual to drop the weapon; however, the subject refused to comply.

The subject then advanced toward an officer. In response to this threat, the officer discharged their service weapon, striking the subject and after securing the scene he began to immediately render aid.

The Gary Fire Department (G.F.D) was immediately contacted to provide medical attention and the subject was taken to an area hospital to be treated.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office was contacted to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave following GPD protocol.

"Situations involving mental health crises are deeply tragic and the balance of keeping the community safe can often be a delicate matter. We understand the fragility involved in these moments and the profound impact they have on families and our community" stated Police Chief Derrick Cannon.

This is an active and ongoing investigation.
