Gary Public Safety Officers Respond to Pedestrian Struck by Train Near East Dunes Highway and Clay Street

July 24, 2025

Gary, IN — At approximately 6:08 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2025, Gary Fire and Police Departments were dispatched to the area of East Dunes Highway and Clay Street in response to reports of a pedestrian struck by a train.

Upon arrival, first responders located a South Shore commuter train stalled on the tracks and confirmed the presence of a deceased adult male near the scene. The train, which was en route to Chicago, had 63 passengers aboard at the time of the incident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among those on board.

No foul play  is suspected in the incident. Preliminary evidence suggests the event may have been a deliberate act. Investigative responsibility has been transferred to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) Police Department.

The City of Gary extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.
