Gary, Indiana, December 3, 2025 – In the early hours of December 3, 2025, at approximately 1:18 a.m., the Gary Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the 3400 block of Burr Street. Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-family residence fully engulfed in flames, with heavy fire conditions reported by multiple neighbors.
Crews worked quickly to protect nearby structures and extinguish the fire. Two occupants were present at the time of the fire. One occupant successfully evacuated and sustained burn injuries, and was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. The second occupant was located within the structure and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Firefighters coordinated with NIPSCO and other utility services to ensure the scene was safe and remained on site until the fire was fully extinguished.
The Gary Fire Prevention Bureau, in partnership with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the Gary Police Department, is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
“Our hearts go out to the affected families,” said Chief Larry Tillman. “We are grateful for the dedication of our firefighters and the support of our partner agencies in handling this tragic incident.”
