Statement from Mayor Eddie Melton on the Passing of Pope Francis

April 21, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that I acknowledge the passing of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis was a beacon of hope to millions, not only within the Catholic Church but across faiths and nations. He championed the causes of the poor, the marginalized, and the voiceless. His message of mercy, peace, and unity transcended borders and brought people of all backgrounds closer together in shared humanity.

As the world mourns this profound loss, we also honor his remarkable legacy—one that challenged us to be better neighbors, to act with kindness, and to lead with love. May his life of service continue to inspire us in our own efforts to build a more just and compassionate world.

We especially recognize and stand with our local Catholic community here in Gary — including the faithful parishioners, clergy, and community leaders — who felt a deep connection to Pope Francis’s leadership and message. Their continued dedication and service reflect the very spirit he embodied.

On behalf of the residents of Gary, Indiana, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community and to all who were touched by the life and leadership of Pope Francis. May he rest in eternal peace.
