City of Gary Announces Major Updates to Residential Recycling Program

June 30, 2026

GARY, IN — June 30, 2026 — The City of Gary is pleased to announce important updates to its residential recycling program, effective July 1, 2026. Following a comprehensive year-long review of recycling operations that included active engagement with local leaders, neighboring communities, industry professionals, and community groups, the city is moving "Gary Forward" with a cleaner, more reliable, and highly accountable recycling initiative.

The revamped program is specifically designed to improve service efficiency, significantly reduce contamination, and guarantee that collected materials are successfully recycled. Recycling relies on clean, consistent, and properly managed waste streams. To achieve this, the city is implementing several key updates:

  1. New Bi-Weekly Collection Schedule Beginning July 1, 2026, recycling collection will occur every other week. While residents designated collection days will remain the same, pickups will follow the new bi-weekly rotation. Residents are asked to place their recycling bins curbside the evening before their scheduled collection day to ensure timely service. A detailed collection schedule has been enclosed for active participants.
  2. Clear Program Compliance and Monitoring To ensure the program remains sustainable and effective, compliance will be closely monitored. Only approved recyclable items detailed in the provided program handout will be accepted. If a bin contains unapproved items, a rejection ticket will be issued explaining the contamination. Please note that after three uncollectible occurrences, the associated address will be removed from the recycling program.
  3. Mandatory Participation Confirmation The success of this renewed effort depends entirely on resident commitment. All existing recycling customers must confirm their intent to continue participating under the new guidelines. Residents must notify the Recycling Department by calling 219-882-8445 no later than July 31, 2026. When calling, please provide your name, address, phone number, and confirmation that you agree to adhere to the updated program rules. You can also fill out the form online here: The City of Gary Recycling Program Agreement.

This program update represents an exciting step forward for the Gary community. By working together, the City of Gary and its residents can build a robust recycling program that drives the community toward a cleaner and more sustainable future.
