Statement from Mayor Eddie Melton on signing of Indiana House Bill 1235

March 16, 2024

The City of Gary made every effort to defend itself against HB 1235, including testifying, writing letters, and meeting with representatives. We appreciate Governor Holcomb’s responsiveness to our concerns.

Now that this decision has been made, our administration will collaborate with partners to explore the most effective legal options for Gary.

While this outcome is disappointing, it will not deter my administration’s unwavering commitment to preventing gun violence and improving public safety in our community.
