Gary, IND. – The Gary Police Department has released its 2025 Mid-Year Public Safety Report, highlighting progress in violent crime reduction, traffic safety, and community engagement from January through June 2025. The report reflects the department’s continued focus on crime prevention, accountability, and collaboration with the community.
From January to June 2025, homicides dropped to 9 cases, a 55% decrease compared to 20 during the same period in 2024. The department achieved an 88% homicide closure rate, well above the national average. Non-fatal shootings also declined to 55 incidents, a 26% decrease from 75 in 2024.
“Our top priority is to protect the people of Gary and create a safer community,” said Mayor Eddie Melton. “These results show that the investments in proactive policing and the leadership of Chief Derrick Cannon are making a difference. We will continue to focus on community partnerships and public safety strategies that drive results.”
Proactive Policing and Patrol Activity
Gary Police officers responded to 38,297 calls for service in the first half of 2025, reflecting the department’s commitment to protecting residents. Extra patrols and premise checks increased by 8.4%, rising to 4,589 from 4,232 in 2024. Additional highlights include:
Investigations and Narcotics Enforcement
The Gary Police Department’s Investigations Division charged 168 defendants with 450 felony and 158 misdemeanor counts in the first six months of 2025. Narcotics enforcement efforts led to 44 defendants charged, with 94 felony and 46 misdemeanor charges filed.
Overdose response also improved, with total cases dropping 36% to 37 incidents, including a 49% decline in non-fatal overdoses. Fatal overdoses remained steady at 15, the same as in 2024.
“I am proud of the progress our department has made so far in 2025,” said Chief Derrick Cannon. “We are seeing positive results because of our focus on accountability, proactive policing, and strong partnerships with the community. Together, we can continue to make Gary a safer place for all.”
Recruitment, Retention, and Department Investments
The department hired five new officers as of July 16, 2025, and is actively recruiting to fill additional positions. A One-Day Hiring Event will take place on August 16, 2025, to attract qualified candidates committed to public service. The Gary Police Department continues to prioritize officer welfare and retention through strategic investments in building renovations, patrol equipment, and officer support services.
