December 23, 2024

At approximately 11:15 PM on December 22, the Gary Fire Department responded to a Norfolk Southern train derailment near 430 N. Clark Road, near the entrance of the old Majestic Star Casino. Seven railcars were involved, one of which spilled an unknown amount of ethanol.  There were no injuries reported.

Hazmat crews arrived promptly and contained the spill by midnight. The situation is now under control, with no impact on traffic flow or operations in the area.

The derailment occurred on private property within the train yard, and GFD crews remained on standby throughout the event. A repair team is currently working to address the damaged trucks.

The Gary Sanitation Department is assessing for infiltration into stormwater and wastewater systems.  At this current time, there is no concern for water contamination.

There are no concerns for public safety at this time. We will continue to monitor the situation closely.
