GARY, IND. — During the 5th Annual Protect the Youth Football Camp, Mayor Eddie Melton proudly presented NFL cornerback and Gary native Lonnie Johnson Jr. with the Key to the City in recognition of his outstanding athletic career and unwavering dedication to his hometown.
“As someone who has spent years counseling and mentoring young people, I know how important positive role models are for our youth," said Mayor Melton. "Lonnie embodies Gary's spirit and shows our next generation they can rise above any challenge to achieve their dreams. This Key to the City celebrates his NFL success, his dedication to Gary, and his commitment to empowering our city's future leaders."
Johnson was born and raised in Gary and quickly developed a love for football at the age of six. He went on to become a standout athlete at West Side Leadership Academy. After high school, he played at a junior college before transferring to the University of Kentucky, where he completed his college football career. In 2019, his hard work and standout performance led to national recognition, earning him the 54th overall pick in the second round of the NFL Draft.
Now entering his seventh year as a professional NFL cornerback, Johnson has made a name for himself as both an athlete and a dedicated philanthropist. His contributions off the field have earned him accolades such as the NFL Community MVP award, underscoring his commitment to making a difference beyond the game.
The Protect the Youth Football Camp, now in its fifth year, is one of Johnson’s most cherished community efforts. More than just a day of sports, the camp is designed to unite the community in a positive, uplifting environment where kids of all ages can learn, compete, and feel supported. Johnson’s mission is simple but powerful: to protect, empower, and inspire youth through mentorship and meaningful connection.
“Gary will always be home,” said Johnson. “This city gave me my foundation, and I’ll always do my part to pour back into my city and the people that helped shape me.”
