March 20, 2025

Mayor Eddie Melton has issued an executive order in response to a natural disaster following the National Weather Service’s confirmation of an EF-1 tornado that struck the Gary area on March 19, 2025.

The City of Gary is taking swift action to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents. Immediate response measures include efforts to reduce flooding, clear roads and neighborhoods of dangerous debris, and remove storm-damaged structures that pose a threat to public safety. In addition, the city is mobilizing resources to provide vital relief and support to affected community members.

“Our primary focus is the safety and recovery of our community,” said Mayor Eddie Melton. “We are committed to working tirelessly alongside emergency responders and city officials to restore normalcy and support those impacted by this severe weather event.”

The local disaster emergency declaration will remain in effect until officials determine that the public is no longer at risk and the situation has been stabilized. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official city channels for updates and safety instructions.

The City of Gary extends its gratitude to first responders, city workers, and community volunteers for their unwavering dedication and resilience during this challenging time.
