Gary Takes Action to Ensure Food Safety; Holds Businesses Accountable

September 6, 2025

Gary, IND. The health and safety of Gary residents is the City’s highest priority. To protect the community, the Gary Health Department, in partnership with Code Enforcement, the Building Department, and the Fire Department, has recently ordered the temporary closure of several food establishments and grocery stores following multiple code violations. These actions are part of a renewed and coordinated effort to raise standards and hold businesses accountable.

The City of Gary is working closely with vendors as they take corrective actions to come into compliance with the code in order to reopen their establishments, none of which have been permanently closed. In some cases, temporary closure has been the only effective enforcement tool to ensure compliance after prior warnings were issued. As of September 5, Miller K Market and Save More have since been reopened after reinspection.

“Our residents deserve to know they can trust the businesses operating in their community,” said Mayor Eddie Melton. “We are raising our expectations for all food and grocery establishments in Gary. We will no longer tolerate establishments that cut corners and compromise public health by neglecting their responsibility to provide fresh, quality food and safe conditions. Our citizens deserve nothing less than the highest quality of standards.”

The City of Gary has been actively exploring ways to ensure residents have access to quality food while corrective actions are underway, including partnering with GPTC to expand access and frequency to other grocery options across the city. For more information, visit https://gptcbus.com/.

The City has also partnered with Dr. Ellen Szarleta and Indiana University Northwest’s Center for Urban and Regional Excellence (CURE) to study food deserts across Gary’s 52 square miles, research

that will identify where food insecurity is most severe and help guide long-term policy solutions.

In addition, the City has funded LaJuan Clemmons and the Gary Food Collective, which provides fresh food and other vital resources to residents.

The City thanks residents for their continued vigilance in reporting concerns. Protecting public health and safety is a shared responsibility, and residents are encouraged to contact the Gary Health Department at (219) 882-5565 to report health violations, or Building, Fire, or Code Enforcement at (219) 881-1400 to report related concerns.

“The City of Gary remains committed to protecting public health and will not stop holding businesses accountable,” said Mayor Melton. “With a clear plan in place to strengthen oversight and enforcement, the City is ensuring that every establishment meets the standards our residents expect and deserve.”
