City of Gary Health Department Hosts City-Wide Baby Shower Event for New Mothers

April 21, 2025

GARY, IND. — The City of Gary’s Health Department recently hosted a successful city-wide baby shower and luncheon with over 100 participants, including expecting mothers, healthcare professionals, and vendors. The goal of the event was to celebrate new mothers and provide educational resources on fetal and infant mortality, fire safety, infant and child CPR, gun lock safety, and more. Participants enjoyed community resource tables, food, and giveaways for mothers and babies.

Lake County continues to rank among the top three counties in Indiana with the highest rates of fetal and infant loss—second only to Marion County. While education alone cannot prevent every tragedy, it remains a key factor in reducing risk and promoting healthier outcomes for mothers and babies. This event was designed to empower local Gary families with vital knowledge and resources.

“This event was about more than just awareness—it was about action,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Janet Seabrook, “The City of Gary remains steadfast in its mission to improve outcomes for our youngest residents. Collaboration and community outreach is key. When we equip parents and caregivers with accurate, accessible information, we create a healthier path forward for our children and our community.”

Veronica Collins, the Executive Director of the Gary Health Department, emphasized the importance of bringing these resources directly to the people.

“We know the community doesn’t always come to us, so we’re committed to going to them. It’s our mission as public health advocates to bridge that gap and make sure families have the tools and education they need to thrive.”

The City of Gary thanks our sponsors—Anthem, CareSource, and MHS Indiana —whose generous support was instrumental in the success of this event.
