City of Gary Activates Emergency Response Following Reported Tornado Sighting

The City of Gary confirms that residents have reported the sighting of a funnel cloud near 21st Avenue and Hendricks in Gary on March 19th. Multiple homes and businesses have reported significant wind damage, with flooding as well as numerous trees and limbs down throughout the affected area. Emergency response teams are on-site, actively assisting residents who have been impacted by the storm.

The city's General Services teams are diligently working to clear fallen branches and debris from streets and public areas in the affected neighborhoods. For downed power lines, residents should exercise extreme caution and call NIPSCO directly at (800) 464-7726. Residents should be aware that high winds are expected to continue throughout the region this evening. If you need assistance, call 311 at (219) 881-1311 or visit gary.gov/311 to submit a request.

The City of Gary is working closely with other local officials and agencies to provide support to families who have been impacted by this event. The Monroe Center, located at 4101 Washington St. Gary, IN, has been opened for residents in need of emergency shelter and can be reached at (219) 501-8766.
