Prescribed Burns Scheduled at Marquette Park to Support Native Habitat Restoration

November 24, 2025

GARY, IND. — The City of Gary Park Department, in partnership with Ecorealm LLC, will conduct prescribed burns at Marquette Park (1 N Grand Blvd) as part of ongoing environmental restoration efforts.

The prescribed burns are planned for Mid-November through mid-April, weather permitting, and will occur between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. They will only take place under favorable wind conditions to ensure smoke is directed away from nearby neighborhoods.

Road closures will be at: Oak Avenue and Newton, Grand Blvd and Forest Ave, and Montgomery and Marquette Dr/Locust Ave. The alternate route is Forest Ave to Newton.

Prescribed burns are a vital tool for maintaining healthy native ecosystems. They help restore natural habitats that have evolved with periodic fire, support native plant growth, and reduce the presence of ticks and poison ivy.

Community members with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact Sandy O’Brien of Ecorealm LLC at (219) 743-0679 or the Gary Park Department at (219) 886-7099 for more information.
