Prescribed Burn Scheduled at Marquette Park

February 27, 2026

The City of Gary would like to inform residents that a prescribed burn is scheduled to take place at Marquette Park on Monday, March 2, between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., weather permitting.

The burn is planned for Units 1 and 5 on the Montgomery side of the park. Please note that timing is dependent on appropriate weather conditions, including wind direction and rainfall. If conditions are not suitable, the burn may be postponed.

Road Closures:
Roads through the park will be temporarily closed during the burn. Motorists are advised to use Forest Avenue and Newton Street as alternate routes.

Prescribed burns are a safe and carefully managed practice that provide significant environmental benefits. They help maintain native dune plant communities and are one of the most effective tools for managing ticks, poison ivy, and invasive species.

Residents may notice smoke in the area during the scheduled timeframe. We appreciate the community’s understanding as this important ecological maintenance is conducted.
