Prescribed Burn Scheduled at Brunswick Park to Support Native Habitat Restoration

GARY, IND. — The City of Gary Park Department, in partnership with Ecorealm LLC, will conduct a prescribed burn at Brunswick Park (737 Clark Road) as part of ongoing environmental restoration efforts. The burn will target a five-acre dune restoration area and a 0.2-acre oak savanna, located northwest of the pavilion and tennis courts.

The prescribed burn is planned for November or December, weather permitting, and will occur between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The operation will only take place under favorable wind conditions to ensure smoke is directed away from nearby homes and the surrounding community.

Prescribed burns are a vital tool for maintaining healthy native ecosystems. They help restore natural habitats that have evolved with periodic fire, support native plant growth, and reduce the presence of ticks and poison ivy.
