GARY, IN (October 21, 2025) – The City of Gary, Indiana, is thrilled to announce that it will present a Key to the City to native daughter and professional basketball star Dana Evans in recognition of her historic career, athletic excellence, and unwavering dedication to youth empowerment.
A special ceremony, led by Mayor Eddie D. Melton and the Gary Community School Corporation, will be held in the West Side Leadership Academy, Thursday, October 30th, at 2:15 p.m. CST at 900 Gerry St, Gary, IN 46406.
Evans, a proud graduate of West Side Leadership Academy, is one of the WNBA’s most dynamic playmakers. Her game—defined by speed, scoring, and relentless competitiveness—propelled her to become a two-time ACC Player of the Year at the University of Louisville. Her professional career includes winning a 2021 WNBA Championship with the Chicago Sky and most recently securing her second WNBA Championship with the Las Vegas Aces in October 2025. Off the court, Evans is a cultural leader and advocate committed to community development through her grassroots mentorship program, Team Evans.
Mayor Eddie Melton expressed the city’s deep pride in Evans' journey and accomplishments.
"Dana Evans embodies the tenacity and talent that defines Gary," said Mayor Melton. "Her journey from West Side Leadership Academy to a two-time WNBA Champion is a testament to the fact that you can achieve greatness no matter where you start. Presenting Dana with a Key to the City is a profound honor for us; she is a true ambassador, and her success reminds all our residents that all dreams are possible."
Free Tickets Available at Eventbrite.
The media and public are encouraged to attend the ceremony at West Side Leadership Academy to celebrate Dana Evans, her historic career, and her lasting impact on the community.
