Gary Fire Department Assists in Semi Rollover Involving 126 Dairy Cattle

March 28, 2025

Gary, IN — At approximately 7:55 AM, the Gary Fire Department responded to a semi-truck rollover on the ramp from I-65 North to I-80 Westbound. The truck was hauling 126 dairy cattle at the time of the accident.

The Gary Fire Department worked in coordination with District 1 Large Animal Rescue and Hein’s Farms Inc. to safely remove the cattle from the overturned trailer. The animals were then transferred to Hein’s Farms’ livestock transport units.

The driver of the semi was not injured. Two dairy cattle sustained injuries; the severity of those injuries is unknown at this time.

We thank all responding agencies for their quick and professional actions in managing a complex scene involving large animal rescue. The cause of the rollover remains under investigation.
