The City of Gary proudly joined Webb House, Inc. and esteemed national guests to break ground on Phase 1 of the Veterans Housing Project in Veterans Village. Representing a $2.5 million investment, this milestone development lays the foundation for five new single-family homes, along with a 1,100-square-foot community clubhouse and play area designed to serve as a neighborhood anchor.
Delivered on behalf of Mayor Melton and the city administration, Chief of Operations Michael Suggs welcomed community members and highlighted the power of public-private collaboration in honoring those who have served.
"With approximately 3,166 civilian veterans calling Gary home, this development underscores our unwavering commitment to honoring those who have served," said Suggs during the ceremony. "Through powerful partnerships, we are taking an incredible step forward today."
The groundbreaking ceremony featured remarks from distinguished guest speaker, former POW Jessica L. Lynch, whose remarkable resilience and bravery continue to inspire the nation.
The national initiative is made possible through foundational support from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Capital Bank, securing up to $1 million in vital funding to support veterans in achieving single-family homeownership. The project also brings together a dedicated coalition of corporate and community partners, including Brown and Momen Inc., RiLA LLC, K. Brown and Associates Consulting LTD, Humana Insurance, Interface Carpet, Bob’s Discount Furniture, and Kidstuff Play Systems Inc.
