Gary Mayor Responds to President Trumps Remarks on Nippon and U.S. Steel Deal

February 7, 2025

I was pleased to hear that President Trump had the opportunity to speak with Prime Minister Ishiba of Japan about a potential deal with Nippon Steel.

Japan is one of America’s greatest allies, and a trusted partner. In recent discussions with Nippon Steel executives, they committed to discussing a deal that both honors the current US Steelworkers labor agreement and promises significant investments in the Gary Works and Mon Valley Works.

I remain supportive of talks with Nippon Steel that bring all stakeholders to the table. I would like to thank US Senator Todd Young, for advocating for Gary and communicating directly with President Trump on the importance of this deal. I’m optimistic that with fresh leadership from the Trump Administration there is a potential for an excellent deal that benefits American steel making communities like Gary for decades to come.
