CLEANING YOUR SEWER NEAR YOU: ATTENTION RESIDENTS & BUSINESS OWNERS

March 10, 2026

With over 15 thousand storm sewer drains in the City of Gary, it is difficult for Gary Sanitary District employees to clear all the clogged storm drains in a timely manner, especially when there are imminent threats during a storm. With the help of Residents and Business Owners, the chances of localized flooding after a storm, could be greatly reduced.

THE CITY IS TAKING PRO-ACTIVE MEASURES TO WITH OUR STREET SWEEPERS TO CLEAN THE MAIN STREETS. WE ARE ASKING ALL RESIDENTS AND BUSINESS OWNERS TO ASSIST BY INSPECTING THE DRAIN AND THE AREA AROUND IT, REMOVING LEAVES AND OTHER DEBRIS FROM THE DRAIN GRATE, AND DISPOSING OF ANY LEAVES AND DEBRIS BEFORE A PREDICTED STORM. IN ADDITION, WE ALSO SUGGEST CLEANING YOUR DRAIN FOUR TIMES A YEAR.

While cleaning the drains, safety is of the utmost importance. So please DO NOT LIFT the drain grate.

We thank you for your cooperation and assistance in keeping our city clean. Should you have any questions, please contact the Gary Sanitary District at 219-944-0595.
