City of Gary Park Department and Ecorealm LLC Announce Prescribed Burn at Brunswick Park

March 6, 2026

GARY, IN — The City of Gary Park Department, in partnership with Ecorealm LLC, will conduct a prescribed burn across 33 acres of Brunswick Park this Sunday between approximately 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM.

The operation will focus on the park's dune and swale oak savanna, specifically targeting the areas identified as units "b" and "c" on the project map.

Why Prescribed Burns Matter Prescribed burns are a vital and carefully managed tool for maintaining healthy native ecosystems. This weekend's operation will provide several key environmental and community benefits:

  • Habitat Restoration: Rejuvenates natural areas that have historically evolved with and rely on periodic fire.
  • Flora Support: Encourages the healthy growth and propagation of native plant species.
  • Pest and Weed Reduction: Significantly reduces the presence of nuisance plants and insects, including poison ivy and ticks.
