Imagine if you and your neighbors had the power to make your block cleaner, safer, and more fun—just the way you want it. That’s what Love Your Block is all about!
This exciting program, led by the City of Gary, gives mini-grants (that’s small amounts of money) to people who live in the neighborhood—people like you! These grants help residents come together to fix things up, clean up empty lots, plant gardens, or even create places where neighbors can gather and celebrate.
And here’s the best part: Gary has been given $100,000 to make it all happen! The money comes from the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins, a group that helps cities try bold new ideas.
With this program, it’s not just about what the city can do—it’s about what you and your neighbors can do together. Because when people work as a team, great things can happen—right on your very own block.
The City of Gary's Love Your Block Program
Gary is starting a new program called Love Your Block. It will begin in three neighborhoods: Glen Park, Midtown, and Black Oak. More neighborhoods may join later.
Glen Park: This area has many small shops along Broadway. The city wants to make it a fun and busy place where people can shop and spend time.
Midtown: This neighborhood has lost many people and has some empty and broken-down homes. The city wants to help clean it up and make it a nice place to live again.
Black Oak: Black Oak has not gotten much help in the past. Not many people live there, but it has a lot of good things to offer. The city wants to be fair and help Black Oak grow and shine.
What the program will do:
In other places, Love Your Block has done things like:
*Cleaning up trash
*Planting flowers and trees
*Fixing empty lots.
*Having fun events for the neighborhood.
This program will help neighbors work together to make their blocks better and more beautiful.
