Building a New Home for Brothers' Keeper

The Partnership

The City of Gary, in partnership with the Gary Common Council, is moving forward with plans to construct a new, modern facility for Brothers’ Keeper, the city’s long-standing shelter serving homeless men and veterans.

The project is supported by a $3 million investment from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.

The new facility will relocate the shelter from its current Broadway location to 2196–2160 Washington Street. Construction is expected to begin in June 2026, with the goal of welcoming residents by October 2026.

The Project

The approved base budget funds the construction of a two-story core facility, designed to better support residents and staff. The new building will include:

  • Dormitory-style housing
  • Counseling offices and interview rooms
  • Multi-purpose community spaces
  • Energy-efficient climate control
  • Essential security systems

The project also includes the preservation and enhancement of the adjacent Urban Garden. In partnership with the Gary Food Council, the garden will be integrated into shelter programming as a therapeutic and vocational space for residents.

Your Support

While construction funding is secured, the overall goal is to reach a $4 million stretch budget to fully equip the facility.

The City of Gary is partnering with the Legacy Foundation to raise an additional $500,000, with a reach goal of $1 million, to help furnish the facility and fund enhancements beyond the base scope. These include:

  • A medical and wellness area
  • A job training lab with vocational technology
  • Hospital-grade air filtration
  • Industrial kitchen equipment
  • Enhanced security and a landscaped courtyard

Community members, corporate partners, and philanthropic organizations are invited to support this effort through the Legacy Foundation. Giving opportunities will be tied to specific capital needs, such as sponsoring a bed or supporting the wellness area.
